在我的领域，有一个我从初学到现在一直十分不适的一个词：regular solution。

regular英语应该是按事物以往的周期发生的意思，但美国人把它用作ordinary（平凡）之义。所谓平凡是要跟“特殊”、“神圣”、“高贵”、“理想”之类的词相对立。不信的可以查一下牛津词典。

Me: I ‘d like a cup of milk please.
Server: We have chocolate, strawberry, vanilla. Which would you like sir?
Me: I’d like a cup of ordinary milk please.
Server: We don’t have that flavor, we only have chocolate etc.
Me: No, I’d like a cup of the white stuff that comes out of a cow:
Server: Oh, you mean regular milk?
Me: Yes please, but I don’t care how often the milk comes out of the cow.

J. Hildebrand——regular solution一词的杜撰者——就是个老美。他出生、求学和任职都在美国。他自己解释过regular solution这个词的意思。这是另一个拿regular当ordinary用的美式英语典型例子。

理想溶液（ideal solution）没有混合热（焓），但哪怕是只有色散力都能必能制造出混合热来——哪有两种分子极化率一模一样的？大小一样的倒是可以。因此在凡间的溶液都不会像理想溶液那样的。

在Hildebrand那会儿还没有什么超额熵效应的报道。他想的就是混合热。现在我们啥都见过了，才把正规溶液定义为超额混合熵为零；混合焓为零定义为无热溶液。
